Frequently Asked Questions/

Is it hard to get to Giske?

No, not really. We’re situated close to Ålesund Airport Vigra where there’s direct flights to the major Norwegian cities as well as some international flights. If you come by car we’re connected to the main land through some bridges and underwater tunnels.

How many people can comfortably stay in Studio A?

We have four bed rooms sleeping eight people.

Where and when can we buy beer?

You can buy beer in the super markets from 8am-20pm on week days and 8am-6pm on Saturday.

Where and when can we buy wine and spirits?

You can buy wine and spirits at Vinmonnopolet Ålesund or Vinmonopolet Moa from 10am-6pm on week days and 10am-4pm on Saturdays.

I want to hire studio B, does it include accommodation like Studio A?

Studio B doesn’t have a dedicated living area like Studio A, but we can usually arrange accommodation either on the island or in Ålesund depending on the needs.

What about transportation, how do we get from the airport to Ocean Sound?

We recommend taking a taxi or rent a car at the airport. We get good deals for car rentals with Avis, so you can pick up a car at the airport and have total flexibility for going to the super market or to Ålesund city.

We don’t want to sleep at the studio, are there any good hotels nearby?

Yes, Ålesund (15 minutes by car) have several nice hotels. We can arrange a good deal with Quality Hotel Waterfront. Hotel Brosundet has a really nice atmosphere as well.

What and where should we eat?

Most artists stock the fridge upon arrival and cook their own food in our kitchen. The closest super market is about 5 minutes from the studio with car, but perhaps bit too far for walking. We can help arrange a rental car for your stay for flexibility. If you want to go out dinner, there are many quality restaurants in Ålesund, like Bro, Zuuma and brewery and burger pub Molo.

FAQs/

Do you work with tape?

Yes we do. Admittedly less than before, but we still keep well-maintained multi-track and two-track tape machines and a stock of tape.

I need some guitar picks, is there a music store around?

Yes, Musikktorget by the shopping center Moa. About 30 minutes from the studio.

Are the instruments and gear included in the studio rates?

Yes.

Are stems included after the mix?

To keep mix rates reasonable, we don’t create mix stems unless needed. So if not specified in your mix quote it’s not included. However we are happy to provide you with stems for remixes, live shows and so on at an hourly rate.

Are the pianos in tune?

Our grand piano and upright is tuned pretty regularly(440hz), but they always sounds their best freshly tuned. So if they’re important for your project we recommended scheduling tuning for a small additional cost.

Do Ocean Sound have their own producers?

Yes, in addition to all the talented visiting producers, Henning Svoren and Anders Boska do a lot of production here throughout the year. Get in touch if you want to find out if they’re a good match for your project.

Can you hire me?

We get quite a lot of e-mails from aspiring engineers and producer(a bunch of them seem seriously talented). However we’re a pretty small organisation with just three full-time members, so your best bet at working at Ocean Sound is on a project that’s booked with an artist you’re working with.

Is your gear list up to date?

Yes, the gear lists are updated regularly. We take non-working gear off the lists.

I have suggestions for your website?

Awesome, send it to henning@oceansound.no

We arrive the evening before the session start, can we set up and do sound check?

We can accommodate that if the studio is available. However the time spent on this is charged in the same manner as the rest of your studio time.

What are your rates?

Get in touch to discuss your project and needs to receive a quote or estimate.

I need a piece of gear/instrument not listed on your website, are you able to help?

Unless very esoteric and specific, we can often help here. Extra costs may apply.

I have recorded at Ocean Sound in the past, can you send me my tracks?

As a courtesy we usually keep a copy of all the projects that’s recorded on one of our Pro Tools systems. It’s easy for us to send you the Pro Tools session and can usually do that free of charge. If you want multitrack wav-files it usually involves going through the session, checking edits/fades, making sure the naming scheme makes sense, going though playlists and alternative takes and so forth, before exporting from a common start point. For this work we charge an hourly rate.

Do you do mastering?

Yes, more info here.

Can I send you my demo?

Sure, we can check it out. Note that we’re not a record label or management, so we cannot sign you a deal.

Can I visit?

It’s always fun to talk with like-minded music nerds, so we try to allow for visits. But we prefer that the studio is not occupied so we don’t disturb ongoing sessions.

Do your gear work?

We place a high importance on maintenance and reliable equipment, so stuff usually work pretty well. However because of the sheer amount of gear here, breakdowns can happen during a session. There’s usually some stuff in our workshop or off to repair elsewhere as well.
